Belmont Univ School of Science Home School Science Discoveries Sessons

Below are descriptions for the remaining three Belmont University School of Science’s Home School Science Discoveries sessions for spring, 2013.  If you are interested In bringing your son(s) or daughter(s) to these laboratory-based experiences, please complete a registration form for each session and email to: steve.murphree@belmont.edu.  Sessions 2 and 3 have been offered previously so, if your child has attended either of these, please consider giving other children a chance to participate.

Please note the grade levels and enrollment limits of each session.  These sessions will be on the 3^rd  floor of the Hitch Science Building on the Belmont University campus (http://www.belmont.edu/campusmap/pdf/campusmap.pdf – Hitch Bldg. is no. 26; Curb Event Center Garage is no. 18).  I will be in touch with you to confirm that your child has a seat in the session(s) for which you applied and to provide more information about parking.

Session 2   Friday, May 10, 2013                     1:00 pm-3:00 pm, Hitch 309

“What’s Alive in a Sample of Water?”

Students will use microscopes to examine and identify organisms from fresh pond or tree hole water samples they have brought with them in plastic or ziplock containers (a turkey baster makes a good sampling tool). Bringing in a sample is not required as additional samples and some from Carolina Biological Supply will be on hand. Maximum of 22 students.

Grades 1-8

“Experiments in Animal Behavior I”

Students will use the scientific method to learn about the behavior of Betta fish.  Each group of students will design and conduct a unique experiment after learning about Betta fish behavior through designed experiments.

Maximum of 22 students.

Session 4   Friday, May 17, 2013

10:00 am -12:00pm, Hitch 309

“Experiments in Animal Behavior II”

Students will use the scientific method and choice chambers to learn about the behavior of pillbugs.  Each group of students will design and conduct a unique experiment after learning about pillbug behavior through designed experiments.

Maximum of 22 students.

TN Spring Star Party

Fall Creek Falls State Park, Cumberland Astronomical Society, Vanderbilt University’s Dyer Observatory and the Astronomy in the Parks Society announced today the Tennessee Spring Star Party will be held May 10-11 at the park. The program is designed to accommodate both beginning stargazers and experienced astronomers.

The Tennessee Spring Star Party begins Friday evening with dark sky field viewing of the beautiful night sky and continues Saturday with astronomy presentations and discussions. There will be more viewing opportunities Saturday evening. Saturday’s events also will include planetarium shows and a special concert.
