9/1/12 Rain for Roots family concert

This Saturday, September 1st, join Rain for Roots (& friends) for a full-band family sing-a-long. We'll do two sets back to back beginning at 10am on Saturday morning  at the YMCA's Y-CAP (1021 Russell Street, 37206). We hope you'll come along and bring a friend or two!  A $10 suggested donation per family will include a copy of the new CD.

Big Stories for Little Ones is a collection of 10 collaborative songs between Rain for Roots and Sally-Lloyd Jones.

Rain for Roots is Ellie Holcomb, Flo Paris, Katy Bowser, and Sandra McCracken. Each of these East Nashville based singer-songwriters bring their voice and vision together in this collective effort to make scripture songs for children. The hope is that these words would take deep root in kids' hearts and stay with them as they grow. It's modern folk music, both smart and inviting. Made for children from age 1 to 99.

RSVP & invite friends & neighbors here. (https://www.facebook.com/events/306533382779382/)

Help for Homework PDF Print E-mail
Written by Laurel Schmidt

feat aug-homeworkMake your home a pleasant “school” when it comes to homework, so everyone gets in on the learning.

Sometimes there’s no end to the supply of tricky spelling words that must be learned each week. That’s what you may be thinking mid year in the middle of homework with your child on any given Wednesday night. Homework’s the equal opportunity disappointment: grueling for struggling students, a time-consuming bore for the eager learners, a hassle for parents everywhere. While your kids may have a few teachers who assign homework sparingly, for the most part, you’re looking at years of at-home tutorials, so think of your homework central as your homeschool. Concentrate on improving your family’s aptitude for homework by implementing seven “DO” rules:

Seven “Do Rules”

#1 DO let your kids find their most comfortable study position in a central, public place at home where the work will get done faster and with less fuss.

#2 DO
let your kids have background music on if it helps them, however, avoid listening to music on ear phones — a child can’t concentrate on his work if he’s concentrating on the song.

#3 DO
make it fun for your little ones. If your child needs to memorize math fractions or spelling words, instead of grinding away with a pencil, try smearing some shaving cream on a cookie tray. This smooth, silky surface is perfect for writing, erasing and writing again. You’ll be amazed at how eager your kids are to practice when the syllabus calls for fun.

#4 DO
save editing for final drafts. Don’t worry about spelling and handwriting when your child is working on a first draft of a writing assignment. Ideas and creativity flourish outside the “rule box.” With second drafts and a little coaching, they’ll enjoy rooting out common words and replacing them with juicier images. Run becomes sprint or dart. Eat turns into gobble or nibble. Then it’s time for editing — after the brain work is done.

#5 DO let kids move, snack, sing or shoot baskets between homework tasks to recharge their batteries. Little breaks pump energy to the brain, driving away fatigue and boredom. Other kids respond very well to the “Beat-the-Clock” approach to homework. Set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes, and see how much they can complete before the time is up.

#6 DO avoid the word “BUT” when checking over your child’s work. Kids listen for your “BUT” and hear little else as their confidence and self-esteem plummet. Point out the positives, beginning by saying, “It’s good, especially this part. I love they way you described the dog howling.” Then ask, “What part do you think is best?” Supported by your praise, kids can assess their own work and hear suggestions without getting defensive.

#7 DO let your kids do their own work. If your child doesn’t understand his assignment (and neither do you) send an e-mail to his teacher.

KY State Fair

The 2012 fair, set for August 16-26 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, is an 11-day celebration of the history, heritage and culture of the Bluegrass State. While its roots are in agriculture, America’s largest indoor fair has grown into a multi-faceted trade and public education exposition that uses more than 1.2 million square feet of contiguous exhibit space.

Many of Kentucky’s counties, along with the Kentucky Department of Travel and Tourism and the Department of Parks, have booths where you can learn more about the state’s popular tourist attractions and 51 state parks throughout the commonwealth.

You can get free eye, ear and other health screenings, participate as a juror in a trial proceeding, watch one of the world’s most prestigious horse shows and sample foods from around the state. Last year, more than 30 competitive entry departments brought in more than 50,000 entries. Also, at the 2011 fair, market animals raised by 4-H and FFA members sold for nearly $140,000. Overall, the 11-day event generates approximately $16.5 million in economic impact.

There’s something for everyone at the fair. Just plain people-watching is a popular diversion as farm families attending the livestock competitions and horse shows mix with city dwellers who want to experience the commonwealth’s diversity. Kids love the midway rides, while many seniors gravitate to the arts and crafts displays. The midway will offer extended hours for the first several days of the fair.

Now in its 108th year, the fair is also a major musical entertainment venue. Fans of several music genres will flock to Freedom Hall during the fair’s Main Stage concert series. Country music legend Hank Williams Jr. will kick off the series on August 16, followed by classic rockers Journey on August 17 and popular country band Rascal Flatts on August 18. Breakout country trio The Band Perry along with rock group NEEDTOBREATHE will perform together on the fair’s final night August 26. Concert tickets are available at the Freedom Hall Ticket Office, KFC YUM Center Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 800-745-3000.

Each of the 10 nights, free concerts will draw big crowds to the original Cardinal Stadium at the fairgrounds for performances by a wide range of entertainers including Keith Sweat, the Oak Ridge Boys, Jake Owen, Young the Giant and Ronnie Milsap, among others.

At the gates, fair admission costs $10 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. For more information and continued updates on all aspects of the fair, visit the official website at kystatefair.org.
