Non-Sport-Specific Summer Camps

Some of these are one week camps, others are summer-long, and still others are one-day events happening throughout the summer.  They are for kindergarten through high school grads, meet in various places and emphasize a variety of subjects and interests.  There are several that are free and even one that PAYS the attendees.  :)

SUMMER DRIVER'S EDUCATION CLASS
    AAA Driving Training will be offering, to all MTHEA students,
 a Drivers Ed. class. Class will begin Monday,
June 4 through Friday, June 8, 2012.
 Class will start at 8 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.
Student may bring a sack lunch or lunch money. All students must pass a class test.
    Course includes 6 hours of driving time with an instructor (3 sessions, 2 hours each).
 Class will be held at Mt.Juliet Senior Citizens Center,
 2034 North Mt. Juliet Road, Mt.Juliet, TN 37122.
Cost for this class is $350.

Mathnasium is offering Math and Science Camp again this year for two weeks this summer.  Here is an outline of the dates and times.  Please see the attached brochure.
June 18th-21st- Exploring Space
12:30 to 4:00
Cost is $125 which includes $25 for supplies.  Each day will start with math for about an hour and move into the science portion after a break.
July 9th-12th- Health and Fitness
12:30 to 4:00
Cost is $125 which includes $25 for supplies.  Each day will start with math for about and hour and move to the Health and Fitness portion after the break.
This camp is intended for rising 2nd graders through rising 7th graders.  Space will need to be limited to 15 kids so it is first come first served.  Attend one or both weeks.  We would love to have you.

 NWP's Summer "Comedy Camp"
NWP's Summer "Comedy Camp", open to rising 5th-8th graders, will be held at the Keeton Theatre (formerly Senior Center for the Arts) at the corner of Lebanon Rd. & Donelson Pk., June 11th-15th, 2012, from 1pm to 4pm daily, with a Final Performance on the morning of June 16th, 2012.

The cost is $100, plus a $25 registration fee.  (Tickets for the final performance will be $5 at the door.)

Topics set to include: 
Maximizing contrast, applying the “Rule of 3’s”, incorporating props, practicing good comic timing, safely utilizing physical comedy (slapstick), pausing for laughter, exaggerating facial expressions/inflections, creating situational comedy, laughing through tears, etc.
Plus, on-stage production aspects such as stage presence, blocking, characterization, line memorization, and line deliverance and back-stage aspects such as costume plots, prop organization, and directing will be addressed.
Overall, students will gain knowledge and an appreciation, both on and off stage, of what it takes to put on a comedic play/program. (The show will have roles to fit a variety of skill levels, from beginners to more advanced.)

Reading Summer Camp

Susan Smartt, Ph.D. is pleased to announce the first annual Reading Summer Camp to be held at the Lantern Lane Farm in south Mt. Juliet this summer. The camp is 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. daily for one week or you can sign your child up for as many as 7 weeks.

This camp is for struggling readers who have completed kindergarten through grade four.  Reading remediation will be integrated with adventures featuring the farm animals: horses, sheep, cows and barn cats.

Dr. Smartt holds credentials in elementary education, special education, remedial reading and school psychology.    She has experience working with students with dyslexia and general "garden variety" reading problems ofter the past 25 years.

Our program is designed to meet the educational needs of students by increasing academic achievement and student performance in preparation of returning to school in the fall. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening reading, writing, math and computer skills. Students will be taught the importance of good citizenship and how to develop positive relationships. Also, students will be involved in art, music, dance, and public speaking which will allow them to express their creativity and imagination. Recreational time will include indoor/outdoor activities. Various educational field trips will be taken. Our visits to area universities will expose students to the climate and routine of a higher education facility. Health Awareness will be an important part of the program emphasizing hygiene, grooming, healthy eating, and exercising.
